Got to take a tour and hang out at Machu Picchu in the early hours of April 15. It is really hard to put into words the feeling you get from being in a site so rich in history, myth and wonder, so to put it mildly, Machu Picchu is epic. We learned some interesting things on the tour. Our guide told us that they used a sole rock at one of the high points in town to tell when it was the winter/summer solstice. The Incas had very intricate and extensive ways of breaking up the rocks to use them to build which included making small holes, filling them with wood and then adding water so that the holes would expand and the rocks would break. The civilization is isolated on the top of a mountain (Machu = old and Picchu = peak) with only the 40km Inca trail serving as a means to transport goods and messages to the neighboring town of Cusco. And when the Spanish came to invade the city, the Incas burned it, evacuated and never returned. We had a really good time exploring and photographing the ruins. Andy took some particularly impressive shots of the alpacas and birds.
